Hemp Child

In this piece, hemp is symbolically represented by sailing rope sourced from England, still in use today. This rope recalls stories of damaged vessels repaired with harakeke, an enduring material. The folded edges of the vessel echo the folds of sails on a boat, connecting to maritime traditions.

Each vessel features a Celtic love knot, composed of two triskeles. These three-cornered knots symbolize the unity of body, mind, and spirit between two people, reflecting the deep connections forged through nautical craftsmanship. The intricate techniques of knotting, weaving, stitching, and rope-making—skills once essential to sailors—inform the design.

Although these vessels may appear delicate, they are robust and suited for outdoor use. They are intended to hold light and inspire conversation, inviting reflection on both their historical and symbolic significance.
