Fabricated from 232 individual CorTen steel plates, our interpretation of the Haast Eagle makes an impressive centre point. Left in a raw finish the CorTen steel we use to create our pieces is a weathering steel designed to rust. When exposed to the elements, the high nickel content of the steel moves outward, creating an outer rust patina layer that protects the steel. This patina forms after a few weeks of exposure and the initial layer (quite a powdery pale orange colour) will wash off either naturally in rain or washed with a hose, this initial wash off can cause staining of surrounding items, so we suggest to either mount the piece spaced off the wall, or allow the first layer to wash off and then mount it. After the initial layer washes off the final protective layer forms which will not stain anything surrounding or attached to it. This final layer does not allow the steel to deteriorate at all, meaning the thickness of the steel now (3mm) will never become less.
